4 Tips to Make Your Morning Commute Easier

Commuters, getting out of bed and getting to class on time can be extremely difficult. Unlike dormers, you have to wake up earlier, get dressed and ready, grab your supplies, and survive a drive to campus, where you may have the most difficult time finding a decent parking spot.

As a former commuter for the four years that I attended Hofstra University, which is roughly a half hour (but sometimes an hour if I had to drive during rush hour) away, I’ve come up with a few tips to help you make your morning commute a little easier.

The Social Landscape in 2014

Social Media provides business professionals more than just a way of interacting with friends and their personal network -- websites like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram allow people to showcase their work and their personalities too.

As the internet changes and evolves (rather rapidly, I might add), more and more social media websites are emerging into the cyber world, most of them having different features and functions. It seems that almost everyone these days is using social media in some form, and freelancers should pay attention to the social habits of creatives and buyers in the magazine, news, and advertising industries. You might say to yourself that you are far too busy focusing on your art to promote yourself socially, but carving out a little bit of time for social media can pay dividends.

6 Unspoken Rules of Successful Blogging

I’ve been an avid blogger since the very young age of just 13. I’ve used all the sites – LiveJournal, Xanga, Blogger, WordPress, and, of course, Tumblr. As a journalism major at Hofstra University, I had to learn all aspects of communications – print, broadcast, and, most importantly, digital (this includes social media and blogging). We were told that blogging was essential to establishing ourselves and our brands as freelance journalists and writers, and the same goes for freelance photographers and artists.

So, yes, I’d definitely say maintaining a blog is important. It’s helpful in not only establishing your brand and promoting your photography, but it also allows creatives (and fans!) to get to know you as a person and as an artist. While they can see your beautiful portfolios on your website, your blog will give them a glimpse of what you’re like to work with, and what you’ve been up to.

Meet The Hofstra PULSE Staff!

This semester, I’m taking a class at Hofstra called Magazine Production. It’s not like any other class I’ve taken before – this class is a lot more fun. We’re spending class time this semester to produce a magazine called Pulse. Pulse is Hofstra’s award-winning student-produced magazine. It’s produced once a semester by the students.

I was given the position Art Director. I work with a team of designers to compose the look and feel of the magazine; the cover, the logo, spreadsheets, color themes, and so much more! I love my position because I hope to be a designer (aside from a beauty editor) for a magazine upon graduation, and this is a great way to get experience and it’ll look awesome on my resume! Cosmo, here I come!

College Relationships: What Do You Consider Cheating?

bubblews.com

Many people have been in a situation where they were in a seemingly perfect relationship and, all of a sudden, their significant other cheats. In a college setting, this may seem more common. The combination of dorm-room parties, alcohol, and an attraction to fellow classmates can certainly lead to what fear most in a relationship – cheating.

Cheating, as defined on dictionary.com, is “to violate rules or regulations” or “to be sexually unfaithful.” There are no set rules and regulations in terms of being in a relationship, so what is right and what is wrong in a relationship is of high controversy.

The Hofstra Pride Network Celebrates LGBTQ History Month

hofstra.edu

The Hofstra Pride Network is celebrating LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning) History Month with a series of events throughout the month of October. These events are open to the entire Hofstra community, gay and straight alike. In October 2010, the Pride Network and the rest of the Hofstra community mourned the losses of several gay teens that committed suicide. This year, things are looking up and the Pride Network has many events planned to raise LGBTQ acceptance and awareness.
